Dear John, Putting together this week’s News Digest, I was surprised at how delighted I was by the “Y’all Means All” campaign in Austin, Texas. As a professional communications person, I’m giddy when a few simple words can say so much. As we process the SCOTUS leak and brace for Roe to be overturned, I’m thinking about that slogan, “Y’all Means All.” Our liberation is tied together. None of us are free until everyone is, and we will continue to feel this in the months ahead. I’ll be figuring out what to do with my sadness and anger this weekend. Let me know how you’re doing Here’s what we’re reading, watching, and listening to this week: 1. Abortion RightsHighly recommend The Gentrification of Abortion Politics and The Mainstream Abortion Rights Movement Failed to Prevent the End of Roe. 2. Alito's Plan“If you are an American with a young daughter, she will grow up in a world without the right to choose when and where she gives birth, and in which nothing restrains a state from declaring her womb its property, with all the invasive authorities that implies.” Read Alito’s Plan to Repeal the 20th Century in The Atlantic. 3. Legalizing Abortion in ArgentinaFrom the Words to Win By podcast, listen to the powerful story of people organizing to win legalized abortion in Argentina in 2020. 4. Iceland Women's StrikeA wonderful story about Iceland history and the day in 1975 in which 90% of women went on strike. 5. adrienne maree brownGet your headphones on and listen to this short livestream from adrienne maree brown posted after the SCOTUS leak. Donate and share: 8 essential organizations to support for reproductive freedom. 6. SCOTUSThis New Yorker piece is a couple years old but relevant, called The Case for Ending the Supreme Court as We Know It. 7. School BoardA record number of Minnesota school board members quit this year. 8. Y'all Means AllThis action is giving me hope: While attacks on LGBTQ+ rights persist, an Austin, Texas City Councilor declared a “Y’all Means All” day. It is one of the best slogans (for Texans) I’ve ever heard. 9. Social MediaElon Musk is buying Twitter. What does this mean for the platform? No one knows for sure. 10. TwitterWell, I stumbled upon this Twitter account called “crazy a** moments in American politics,” and it’s worth a follow.
That’s a wrap.
