Muslim Council of Britain hopes for unity as Mr Johnson becomes the new Prime Minister
23 July 2019
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) today welcomed Boris Johnson as the new Prime Minister, articulating its hope that his leadership will be able to unite the country at a time of increasing division.
In a letter welcoming the new Prime Minister, Harun Khan, Secretary General of the MCB, said: “We wish you, our new Prime Minister, well as you attempt to navigate the country through the Brexit process.”
With the rise of the far-right mirroring a rise in Islamophobia, he added: “The new incumbent in Downing Street provides an opportunity to transform the government's relationship and engagement with Muslim communities by recognising our sincerely-held concerns about the rise of the far-right and Islamophobia, by understanding the importance of defining the hatred we face and by taking urgent steps to tackle Islamophobia wherever it is found.”
As some are anxious about the new premiership, given previous comments about Muslim communities and that we are in an era of divisive politics, Mr Khan concluded: “We pray that you will be able to abide by your promises during the campaign, and as with your time as Mayor of London, we are able to work together to help ensure the power of government can support those most vulnerable, can combat division and can foster strength between communities.”
