John, I have been working on something big. Let me tell you about it. Until three weeks ago, Terrell Blodgett, a World War II Army veteran, had never missed an election — not for 65 years. But in 2019 Texas Republicans enacted a new law to suppress the vote, HB 1888, that has particularly hurt older voters and students by banning “mobile voting locations” at schools and senior centers. Like Mr. Blodgett says, “they ought to be encouraging the vote, not suppressing it!” Today we are fighting back. This morning, I filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of Mr. Blodgett, the Texas Young Democrats, and the Texas College Democrats. My co-counsel is a national voting rights expert, Renea Hicks. The GOP is doing everything they can to suppress the vote. When less people vote, the GOP can stay in office. That is exactly why Republicans passed this law.
Republicans are desperate to hold on to their waning power in our diverse state. They lose as young people get involved in the political process. So in the 2019 Legislative session, the GOP worked hard to kill temporary polling places at colleges and universities. The ban on mobile voting especially impacts people with disabilities and people with limited transportation. And in the context of continuing racially targeted voter suppression, it disproportionately hurts students at the state’s historically black colleges and universities, including Prairie View A&M in my district. Last year, I helped to defeat voter suppression tactics aimed at the students of Prairie View A&M. Today I took our latest fight for voting rights to the federal courts. I will never stop working for you. And I need your help to fight against voter suppression! Donate $5 Donate $10 Donate $20 Donate $50 Donate $100
