Words can be incredibly powerful.

Justice Alito’s leaked decision draft is 98 pages that leave the Supreme Court poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. Thousands of words that strung together set the stage for states to outlaw abortion and leave as much as half the country without access to a safe and often necessary healthcare procedure.

Words matter. That’s why I’m asking you to fight back with your own words. In a few clicks, send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper publicly urging your lawmakers to protect our fundamental freedoms by expanding the Supreme Court.

By passing the Judiciary Act, which would add four seats to the Supreme Court, Congress can rebalance an institution now controlled by right-wing ideologues who will continue to threaten our most basic freedoms if we don’t do something to stop them. 

I know what you’re thinking—how can words in a newspaper possibly make a difference at a time like this? The right words can make all the difference. Spreading the word through local media is a great way to amplify an issue, put pressure on lawmakers, and educate your friends and neighbors about a path forward after this disastrous Supreme Court ruling. Hundreds of letters from the Stand Up America community have been published in papers nationwide over the past few months. 

As a staffer working on Capitol Hill, I would always strive to be the one who helped get to the truth of the matter. And the truth of the matter is this: This decision wasn’t spontaneous. Unraveling Roe v. Wade has been a concerted effort by far-right politicians, years in the making. 

We can trace the thread back to last fall, when the Supreme Court looked the other way as Texas essentially banned abortion care. And we can follow that thread further back to Mitch McConnell’s refusal to hold a vote on Merrick Garland’s nomination for 237 days before the 2016 election, allowing Donald Trump to appoint three hardline, anti-choice conservatives to the court.

Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump’s hand-picked justices shouldn’t get to control our bodies or make decisions about our healthcare. To protect Americans’ reproductive freedom and fundamental rights for the long term, Congress must expand the Supreme Court. Send a letter now.
