The shooting was reported outside the Chevron gas station near the intersection of West Washington Boulevard and South Figueroa Street just after 3 a.m. Arriving officers found a man down with a gunshot wound, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Investigators are looking at video from the gas station and talking to witnesses to help determine what led up to the shooting and identify any suspects. “At this point we simply do not know,” Rabbett said. Multiple casings were found in the gas station parking lot, but it was unclear if there was more than one gun involved or if there was a shootout, Rabbett said. WestSide Current Hidden Hills Socialite Rebecca Grossman To Face Murder Trial In Crash That Killed 2 Boys A Hidden Hills socialite must stand trial on murder charges in the deaths of two boys, a judge decided Thursday after hearing testimony that Rebecca Grossman struck the pair in a crosswalk while going more than 70 mph and continued driving. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Shellie Samuels determined after a five-day preliminary hearing that there is sufficient evidence for Grossman to be tried on two counts of murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. “The defendant was not rushing to get home; she was playing a high-speed game of chicken with Mr. [Scott] Erickson,” Samuels said in ordering Grossman to stand trial. “I believe the defendant went well beyond gross negligence.” Samuels ruled that Grossman was traveling 81 mph in a 45-mph zone and said that if two witnesses approaching the crosswalk in another car about the same time saw the two boys and their family crossing the street, as they testified in the hearing, Grossman must have seen them too. “One can surmise she did see them,” and yet continued at 73 mph through the crosswalk. MyNewsLA.com Local Government News LA City Council Members Seek To Implement Emblem Program For Cannabis Stores As a measure to protect cannabis consumers from untested and unregulated product at unlicensed businesses, two Los Angeles City Council members introduced a motion Wednesday aimed at implementing a county program that issues emblem placards to licensed cannabis businesses. Under the County of Los Angeles’ Emblem Program for Authorized Cannabis Stores, storefront and delivery cannabis businesses are able to apply for an emblem, obtain the requisite inspection and place the emblem on their premises in an area visible to someone outside the store. “Unfortunately, unlicensed commercial cannabis activity continues to undermine the legal commercial cannabis industry and threaten the health and safety of Los Angeles residents,” said Councilman Paul Koretz, who co-introduced the motion. MyNewsLA.com Los Angeles City Council Orders Testing Near Former Toxic Dump Site The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday voted to begin off-site testing of wastewater, storm water and soil near a Lincoln Heights development project following reporting over the weekend about the site’s toxic dumping history. The motion, which was both introduced by Councilman Gil Cedillo and passed by council members Wednesday, cited Los Angeles Times reporting from Saturday about investigators with the District Attorney’s Office’s former Los Angeles Hazardous Waste Task Force finding 252 barrels filled with toxic chemicals buried at the site in 1984. The Times also reported that testing at the property — which is located at 135-153 W. Avenue 34 — in 2021 found that volatile chemical compound levels were more than 4,000 times higher than recommended for residential standards. “Toxins do not stop at property lines and there is an immediate need to perform further testing. This parcel sits across the street from an elementary school and residential housing,” said the motion, which was seconded by Councilman Kevin de Leon.
