Hello,
This week, we found out that the Supreme Court is planning to overturn Roe v. Wade. But we can overcome their extremist agenda if we make one basic change to the Senate rules. Here’s how:
I’ve cosponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which passed the House and would codify abortion rights nationwide, no matter what the Supreme Court does to Roe. But to get this legislation through the Senate, we need to get rid of the filibuster—which has let the Republican minority block critical bills like the WHPA from passing.
Even with Democrats holding the majority, the filibuster allows for minority rule. Senate Republicans haven’t just filibustered the WHPA—they’ve also filibustered raising the minimum wage, protecting the right to vote, and passing common-sense gun safety reform.
These are broadly popular, badly needed bills that I’ve fought to get through the House. But Mitch McConnell has been able to filibuster them to death.
The filibuster has to go. It’s a relic that Jim Crow defenders used to block civil rights, it still undermines our democracy, and it’s time to abolish it.
If I become Vermont’s next senator, I will vote to end the filibuster so we can protect Americans’ basic rights and deliver results for families. But I can’t win this fight by myself—we all need to raise our voices.
Add your name right away to say it’s time to get rid of the filibuster.
Thanks,
Peter
