Dear Constituent,

A very warm welcome to this week's edition of the Denton and Reddish weekly news.

Yesterday, we had the local elections, with a number of local seats up for grabs. I had a busy week campaigning with Labour friends and colleagues. A huge thank you to all who took part - the candidates of all parties, the elections staff, the police, the teams out supporting their respective candidates and the voters who put their X where they believed would be best. 🗳️
Denton and Reddish continues to stand with the people of Ukraine.

I’m supporting the British Red Cross's humanitarian effort in Ukraine along with Team Denton South (who set up the gofundme page) and Cllr Allison Gwynne. Please donate if you can to the fundraising page.

We hope that every donation will in some way help the people of Ukraine at this extremely traumatic time.👇

Local Elections 2022: Results

Yesterday was a long day (and a late night) but all in the cause of democracy.

For the Denton and Reddish parliamentary constituency (which straddles two council areas) very little changed. Tameside Council remains Labour-controlled, and Stockport Council remains with no party in outright control.

A big congratulations to the winning Labour candidates: Oliver Ryan, Vincent Ricci, Claire Reid, Mike Smith, Jackie Lane and David Wilson.

Massive commiserations to Holly McCormack in Reddish South. It wasn’t to be, but she’s one to watch. Thanks Holly. And well done to Liz Crix for the Greens who took the seat.

As someone who served for 12 years as a councillor, I know local government matters. It’s where you can make the biggest changes locally, and really help people, if you do the job well.

Gwynne slams broken pension promises

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has criticised the Government after it was revealed that working pensioners across the North West are set to be an average of £2,300 worse off over the next two years because of broken Tory manifesto commitments.

In their 2019 General Election manifesto, the Tories made three clear commitments: To keep the triple lock on State Pensions, not to raise the rates of National Insurance and to introduce new measures to lower energy bills.

Since then, the Tories have made the biggest real-terms cut to the State Pension in fifty years, hiked taxes and allowed energy bills to soar.

New analysis from the House of Commons Library shows that working pensioners – who are uniquely hit by all three of these broken Tory manifesto commitments – are set to be an average of £2,300 worse off over the next two years.

It shows working pensioners in the North West will see real-terms reductions in their incomes over the next two years from the broken Triple Lock, soaring energy costs – captured by spiralling inflation – and a Tory tax hike:

  • A working pensioner earning £16,000 faces a real-terms reduction of £1,790.
  • A working pensioner on the average salary for someone over 60 of £24,900 faces a real-terms reduction of £2,300.
  • A working pensioner earning £40,000 faces a real-terms reduction of £3,200.

Labour is reiterating its call on the Government to bring forward an Emergency Budget to urgently tackle the Tory cost of living crisis.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“This analysis shows that the Tories are totally out of touch with the challenges retirees and working pensioners are facing across Denton and Reddish.

They’ve broken promises, offered no help with soaring energy bills, and failed pensioners.

We need an Emergency Budget to give pensioners and retirees the security and the respect that they deserve.”

Jonathan Ashworth, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said:

“Boris Johnson has abandoned his promise to help Britain’s retirees with the cost of living crisis.

“The Conservatives have broken the triple lock, just imposed the biggest real terms cut in the state pension for 50 years and clobbered working pensioners with more tax.

“Our retirees – who have contributed so much to our society – deserve better. Labour will stand up for pensioners and older people.”

Getting the vote out across Denton and Reddish 🗳️

I've spent most of the week pounding pavements across Denton and Reddish, and campaigning ahead of the local elections, which took place yesterday.

A massive well done again to everyone who put themselves forward as candidates. Local democracy is so important, and a good councillor can make a massive difference to the lives of local people!

Another buzzing Worker Bee Market 🐝

On Saturday, it was great to pay a visit to another fantastic Worker Bee Market in Reddish. Great to be joined by Holly McCormack and Cllr. Janet Mobbs… and it was buzzing with customers.

As usual, there was a great selection of crafts, foods and other wares. A few new traders too. It’s always a brilliant event. Here’s to the next one!

#GardeningWithGwynne at Harrogate Road Allotments 🌹

I popped along to Harrogate Road Allotments in Reddish on Sunday morning to bagsy some summer bedding* plants.

They have a sale every Sunday in May 10am-12 noon. Please support them if you can (they’re great prices too!)

*still danger of a frost so not for planting yet. Keep them in a protective place for now.

Celebrating 26 Years 📅

On Monday, I celebrated the 26th anniversary of my first election onto Tameside Council, when I was elected to represent Denton West Ward. It’s a privilege I had for 12 years.

Thursday also marked my 17th anniversary as the Member of Parliament for the Denton and Reddish constituency. That’s 26 continuous years of public service in total.

It remains a massive honour to represent my home community in Parliament and before that, on the council. I might not get it right all of the time, but I will always try my best. Thank you to all who’ve helped and supported me along the way! 🎉

📰READ: Two businessmen who together donated more than £1m to the Conservative Party have been handed prominent public health jobs.

The whole thing just reeks of Tory cronyism. We need the Health Secretary to come clean on how these appointments were made, and that these positions won’t be used to benefit private interests over public health.
