Thao Thai used to be extremely competitive – storm-off-from-a-casual-game-of-Gin-Rummy competitive. Her daughter’s birth changed that: “When I saw my baby’s face, I knew there was no comparing her to anyone at all. I saw, for the first time, how very unique a person can be, and how sometimes love can exist in an absolute vacuum.”
But now she faces a new challenge: making sure she imparts that wisdom to her daughter. So she realized when school announced a reading contest, and her typically sweet and good-natured kid announced with steely resolve: “I will beat them all.”
