Friends —
In light of the recent news that the Supreme Court is likely to strike down Roe v. Wade, I wanted to talk about how personal and important the fight to codify Roe is to me. Protecting abortion access has been the pillar of my entire career in government.
When I challenged State Senator Jeff Klein in 2018, he had a long history of obstructing progress on abortion rights in New York. Along with other fake Democrats supporting a Republican agenda in the Senate, Klein repeatedly blocked legislation that would have codified legal abortion. This was despite the fact that he had run for reelection year after a year as a pro-choice Democrat.
After Donald Trump’s victory, I knew that we couldn’t depend on Roe being upheld to keep abortion safe and legal. Members of the state legislature had to act immediately to protect the right to an abortion.
That’s why I ran for office against Klein – the very man standing in the way of codifying Roe – despite the fact that so many people were telling me I didn’t have a chance.
In early 2019, just one month into my first term, New York finally passed the Reproductive Health Act into law, protecting the right to an abortion in our State.
Now, in the event that Roe is overturned, New York will remain a safe haven for individuals seeking abortions across the country.
But the truth is that Roe being overturned will still be a disaster for anyone seeking reproductive healthcare in the United States. And truthfully, Democrats in the U.S. Senate need to fight harder to immediately suspend the filibuster and pass legislation affirming the right to an abortion. We are running out of time, and protecting the right to choose is a pillar of the Democratic Party.
As your representative for NY-3, I will do everything in my power to support access to reproductive healthcare, and hold accountable anyone standing in our way regardless of their party. But I’ll need your help to get there, so please:
Thank you for reading, and thank you for your support.
All my best,
Alessandra
