** MAY NEWSLETTER
------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, John.

I’d like to start this month’s newsletter with a personal message.

For the past two years, I have served as President of the Morris County Young Democrats, and before serving in this role, I was Vice President for two years. It has been an honor to help build and run this organization over the past four years.

So much has changed around us in that time. The Morris County Democrats have flipped dozens of federal and local seats blue, we have survived two history-making presidential administrations, and we’ve all been through a global pandemic. Through that time, the MCYD has continued our work of engaging young voters across the county and working hard to elect Democrats up and down the ballot.

With MCYD’s regular bi-annual executive committee elections coming up this July, it is with some sadness that I share that I will not be pursuing another term as President. I am leaving the state of New Jersey to attend graduate school. While I’m excited for the next chapter, I will miss the amazing folks here at MCYD. It has been an honor to serve as President these past two years.

Included in this newsletter is a detailed description of the MCYD election process; information about our next regular monthly meeting ([link removed]) , which will take place on Thursday, May 12; and our statement on the SCOTUS leaked draft Dobbs decision.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your President.

Sincerely,
Ore Obiwumi

MCYD Executive Board Elections Process

Special Election Meeting: The MCYD Executive Board Special Election Meeting will take place via Zoom on Thursday, July 14 at 7:00 PM. A signup link for this event will be shared in early June.

Voting Eligibility: All members in good standing are eligible to vote on the executive board. In order to be a member in good standing of the MCYD, you must be a Democrat under the age of 36 residing in Morris County, have paid your $5 dues in the past year (if you haven’t already, please do so here ([link removed]) ), and have attended at least two MCYD meetings between January 14 and July 14, 2022, inclusive of the July 14 special election meeting.

Running For Office: All nominations for MCYD officer positions must take place by slate. A full slate consists of one candidate each for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. All candidates must be MCYD members in good standing. Slates are required to file their intention to run via email to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) by Thursday, June 30 at 11:59 PM.

During the special election meeting on July 14, each candidate on each slate will have the opportunity to speak to the members present and make the case for their candidacy. MCYD members in good standing will have the opportunity to cast a secret ballot during the special election meeting. The results of the election will be announced on the evening of July 14 and winning candidates will take office immediately afterward. A detailed overview of the election process is enumerated in the MCYD bylaws ([link removed]) .

MCYD May Meeting

Please join us for our May meeting on Thursday, May 12 at 7pm! T.C. McCourt, the Outreach Coordinator of MCYD and a candidate for Morris County Commissioner, will be our special guest and will give us an overview of his campaign. He’ll also provide information about how MCYD can help. During this meeting, we will also provide more information about the upcoming MCYD Executive Board elections. Sign up here to join us on Thursday, May 12th ([link removed]) !

MCYD's Statement on the Leaked Draft Dobbs Decision

On Monday, in a truly unprecedented event, a draft decision on the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court case was leaked to the public. If that opinion becomes final, it will strike down Roe v. Wade and set back fundamental rights in this country by half a century. While the leak was unexpected, the decision itself is not. The GOP has been intent on eviscerating federal civil rights protections for decades.

The MCYD is more resolved than ever to fight to protect access to abortion care and reproductive justice for all our communities. We hope you will join us in continuing our work to elect pro-choice Democrats at all levels of government. Thank you for standing with us.
