If you've been following this newsletter for a while, you know that winter is a tough time not to have an ID. It's a season when emergency shelters open, but many of them require identification to get a bed. Grocery stores and food banks collect food so that families can have a holiday feast, but often require IDs to pick them up. There is plenty of seasonal work but, again, IDs needed. And if you want a toy for your child? Toys for Tots requires not one, but two forms of ID for each CHILD.
For so many of us, the holidays are a time of joy, family, and Mariah Carey. But for millions around the country, it is a time when hope is at its dimmest, and it can also be the most dangerous time of the year. We work with a shelter in West Virginia that requires ID. Last winter, a woman they turned away froze to death on their doorstep. We don't ever want that to happen again.
This winter, while you're enjoying your well-deserved rest (you have almost survived 2019!), catching up with family, and possibly dipping your toe into the Black Friday sales, please spare a few dollars for someone whose life may well depend on having an ID this winter.
