Jack—
During the summer of 2020, following the police murder of George Floyd, it felt as if our country was moving towards a consensus to reckon with its history of systemic racism and violence against Black lives. Two years later, that collective awakening appears to be fading as organizations and corporations that once spoke up against anti-Black violence and discrimination are now backing off and moving on.
But the country has yet to atone for the lasting consequences of exploiting Black labor to build America’s wealth. Descendants of enslaved people still have not received justice or restitution for the arduous labor their ancestors were forced to perform and the heinous abuses they suffered.
The traumas of slavery continue to reverberate today in the form of a gargantuan racial wealth gap and widespread inequality in employment, housing, and education.
Sign this petition and urge Congress to pass the bill to study reparations.

As journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote, “If true justice and equality are ever to be achieved in the United States, the country must finally take seriously what it owes black Americans.”
Fortunately, lawmakers like Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18), with the support and leadership of Black-led organizations and their allies, have re-introduced legislation HR 40, which would establish a commission to study the history of slavery in the U.S. and determine what is owed to the descendants of enslaved people.
In the 30 years since HR 40 was introduced, there has never been more support for this legislation than there is now.
It’s time for U.S. lawmakers to keep the promise long denied to Black people.
We have the bill. We have the votes. Now, we just need Congress to have the courage.
