Hi John,

Did you see the shocking news this morning? Shell raked in a record £7.3 billion in the first quarter, amidst astronomical rises in energy bills for households. [1]

While Shell was busy exploiting the planet for profit, people across the UK were facing a cost of living crisis, with Black households disproportionately impacted by skyrocketing prices. [2] Now, Shell is trying to push through Jackdaw, a new oil and gas field in the North Sea. Can you join the #StopJackdaw coalition and demand the UK government reject all new oil and gas projects?

Let us be clear: Jackdaw will do nothing to lower energy bills or provide a more reliable energy supply in the UK, but it will make the climate crisis a whole lot worse. [3] The gas in Jackdaw doesn't belong to the UK, it belongs to Shell. They won't reserve the gas for the UK and sell it to households at affordable prices. Instead, they'll sell it on the international market to the highest bidder.

During an interview this week, Boris Johnson said the best thing to help people facing rising energy bills is to abate the cost of energy—to be honest, we couldn’t agree more! [4] To lower energy bills now, Boris' government needs to grasp the real and quick solutions that are right before their eyes. That means implementing a windfall tax on Big Oil's record-breaking profits and then using that money to make people's homes much more energy efficient. Opening up new oil and gas fields in the North Sea is a massive distraction that won't help struggling households and will only drive us deeper into the climate crisis. [5]

Burning the gas from Jackdaw would create half the annual emissions of Scotland (or more than the annual emissions of Ghana). [6] As the UN’s new IPCC report on mitigation made clear, we can have no new oil and gas expansion if we want to make our very narrow window to limit warming to 1.5C. [7]

By signing this petition now, we can show the UK government how much the public oppose new oil and gas extraction. We know public pressure can get Johnson to change course—we've lost count of how many u-turns we've seen from him these past years. Together, we can stop Jackdaw: [link removed]

In solidarity,

P.S. Once you’ve signed the petition, can you join us in demanding the government implement a windfall tax on oil and gas giants like Shell? You can make your voice heard here: [link removed]
