Dear John,

The washerwomen in Atlanta had a plan when they went on strike in 1881, demanding higher wages and a little dignity. So did the garment workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, as they demanded bread and roses. And so did the immigrant women who formed the “Uprising of the 20,000” in 1909 in New York City, as they launched a citywide general strike for better wages and safety conditions.

In three marvelous speeches, Elizabeth Warren lifted up their struggles, and connected them to those of our times. (It was a blessing to attend the one in Washington Square Park with my daughter Rosa, who is named in part for Rose Schneiderman, one of the leaders of the Uprising).

As Ryan Grim outlines [[link removed]] , those speeches do two things we urgently need: They connect the exclusions of race, gender, and immigrant status -- axes of fierce oppression then and now -- with the struggle for economic justice. And they reflect on how to combine powerful grassroots “outside” movements with smart and dedicated “inside” policy work for change.

For me, the three speeches really capture why I was the first elected official in New York to endorse Elizabeth Warren [[link removed]] , way back in May when she was polling [[link removed]] in the single digits.

As the primaries get closer, I’m eager to hit the ground running for her, and I want to knock doors, make calls, and canvass with those of you who are supporting her too.

Will you sign up to take action for Elizabeth with me?

Yes, let’s get to work! [[link removed]]

Not my candidate. [[link removed]]

If we can combine the fight for a more just economy with the struggles of those who have been oppressed because of who they are, we can build the majority we need to win the election. If we can build an inside/outside movement like the ones she described, then we can deliver concrete gains for people, even as we build power for more.

I believe Elizabeth Warren is the best candidate to do that. And don’t just take it from me. Watch Ady Barkan [[link removed]] tell his new daughter Willow about the future he wants for her and why Elizabeth is going to get us there.

With our help, I believe she can win.

But it takes more than just believing. It takes having a plan, and getting to work.

So I’m hosting a canvass for Elizabeth Warren on December 7th in Park Slope. (Sign up and we’ll send you more details soon).

Will you sign up to volunteer for Elizabeth Warren with me? [[link removed]] We will keep you posted about more opportunities to get involved.

With hope,

Brad

P.S. If Elizabeth is not your candidate, that’s okay! We still have a lot of work to do together. Let us know [[link removed]] and we’ll try our best not to send you too many emails about volunteering for her.
