I wish I had a great, encouraging message for you, but this is a lot to take in.
However you’re feeling this week and as we move forward is valid. This feels like a sucker punch, so whether you’re angry, upset, ready to mobilize, protest, fight, or need to take a beat, do what is right for you at this moment. Know that everyone at Team Kelly is sending a virtual hug your way.
Things feel especially bleak in Arkansas right now. Our current AG and my likely GOP opponent in the Lt. Governor race, Leslie Rutledge, has stated that should the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade, Arkansas will immediately ban abortions.
Here’s what Rutledge said in an interview with PBS:
“In Arkansas, we are prepared to save [the] lives of unborn children. We put a law in place in 2019 that we are essentially calling a trigger law, which will go into effect in the event that the court does in fact overturn Roe v. Wade and the Casey decision.
The trigger law essentially says that in Arkansas, as the attorney general for the state, I will certify that that is what the Supreme Court of the United States has done, has overturned Roe v. Wade and Casey, which would allow us to have a total ban on abortions in effect — a total ban except to save the life of a mother in a medical emergency.”
Arkansas is one of 13 states with a “trigger law” in place, so we need to get to work supporting leaders up and down the ballot this November who will fight for abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, access to quality sex-ed, and so much more that will protect our most basic freedoms.
My team and I are ready to fight, but we need you with us. Will you pitch in now to help me advocate for policies that will help Arkansans and their families and stop leaders like AG Rutledge in 2022?
We can’t do this without you.
In solidarity,
Kelly
