Pittsburgh's 'eds and meds' are economic drivers. But their tax status largely passes the bill for government to the rest of us.
Remember the OnePGH Fund ([link removed]) ?
A little more than a year ago, then-Mayor Bill Peduto announced the fund, totaling $115 million over five years. He hoped it would be a major milestone in his yearslong quest to get tax-exempt nonprofits to give more to the city.
Then, Mayor Ed Gainey took over and the fund's future became unclear. He's taken some actions recently, giving the public some clues.
Today, our reporters Charlie Wolfson and Emma Folts tell the story of OnePGH, one year later. ([link removed])
Read today’s installment of The Exempt Dilemma ([link removed]) (and catch up on the first story to learn what Pittsburgh’s major nonprofits would owe if they weren’t mostly exempt from property taxes ([link removed]) ).
