Tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., the New Orleans City Council will consider an override of Mayor LaToya Cantrell's veto of an ordinance to remove the mayor’s ability to hire staff without the approval of the council.

The Council already has the power to fire appointees. This ordinance will make it harder for the administration to function efficiently. 
"As written, the Confirmation Ordinance is both duplicative and duplicitous. The City Council, under the current charter, has ample authority to check mayoral appointments and to bring charges against any person appointed to the unclassified service for lack of qualifications, incompetence, or neglect of duty. Framed by its supporters as a restraint on executive authority - this Ordinance is in fact an explicit claim to executive authority. The role of the Council is to legislate, not administrate. This ordinance is a power grab for control, and a bad-faith attempt to hobble the authority of the duly-elected executive."

At a time when our city is set to be the beneficiary of unprecedented amounts of federal spending and investments in infrastructure, our leaders should come together to tackle our city's most pressing issues.

I hope that you will show up in the City Council Chambers at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in support of Mayor LaToya Cantrell's veto.
