Friend,
After a leaked draft document showed the majority of Supreme Court justices plan to overturn Roe v. Wade, people rallied across the country in support of abortion rights.
We now have a short window of time before the Supreme Court announces their final decision in late June.
I want to make it explicitly clear that this draft decision is not final, that abortion is still legal in the United States, and that people should still seek the care they need.
In the House, I am proud to have voted for the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would go further than Roe v. Wade, ending state-level restrictions on abortion.
The U.S. Senate must abolish the filibuster and pass this legislation immediately.
Please sign now to tell the Senate: We need you to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act immediately, which will likely require ending the filibuster. You can and must act to protect the right to access abortion care in every state.
Note: The bill refers to women but, if passed, it would protect the health of anyone who can give birth, including trans men, non-binary people, and intersex people.
Even with Roe v. Wade in place, the legality of abortions has not guaranteed access to abortions. Decades of attacks have left our fundamental human right to reproductive rights and abortion hanging by a thread, just one Supreme Court decision away from being abolished on the federal level.
The people most harmed by such attacks have been Black women and people who are working to make ends meet, who already face systemic barriers in healthcare.
Already, about 90% of U.S. counties are without a single abortion provider, and some states have only one clinic left. Most people can’t afford the time or money it takes to travel long distances for abortion care.
Due to structural racism, Black women are 2 to 6 times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy and giving birth. This means Black women’s lives would be particularly endangered by the overturning of Roe v. Wade, at which point about half of states would ban abortions.
What’s powerful about the Women’s Health Protection Act is it would go further than Roe v. Wade has in ensuring access to abortion care. It would affirm the right to provide and receive abortion care, free from medically unnecessary restrictions that some states have enacted—including mandatory waiting periods, biased counseling, two-trip requirements, and mandatory ultrasounds.
We need federal leadership right now. We can’t wait until after the Supreme Court potentially overturns Roe v. Wade—we need nationwide standards protecting abortion rights before that happens.
The Senate must act now to ensure that we do not go backward. Instead, we can expand reproductive justice and enshrine our right to sovereignty over our own bodies into federal law for the first time. Now we have a chance for something better.
Please sign now to demand the Senate pass the Women’s Health Protection Act immediately to ensure access to abortion care in every state.
Thank you,
Rashida
