[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

As I imagine you’ve heard, major news outlets reported earlier this week that they had obtained a leaked draft opinion in which a majority of the Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey — the two most foundational precedents for the constitutional right to abortion. If Roe is overturned, 26 states stand ready to make abortion illegal immediately.

I know this is a terrifying, watershed moment. So I want to be clear about two things upfront:

First, at this moment, your constitutional right to an abortion stands. In every single state. If you or someone you know needs an abortion, abortion providers stand ready to provide the health care you need and are entitled to.

Second, if you are wondering how you can help, and how you can make an immediate impact to preserve abortion access, then please consider making a donation to the National Network of Abortion Funds. Abortion funds are working nonstop to make sure people can still access and afford an abortion.

Abortion care is essential health care. For decades, a clear majority of Americans have understood that and supported access to safe, legal abortions as a constitutional right.

Packing the Supreme Court in order to allow states to criminalize abortion has always been Republicans’ goal. They have spent years stocking the federal judiciary with far-right ideologues to achieve it. And they won’t stop here — a nationwide ban on abortion access is their end goal.

But Democrats need to be very clear here: Banning abortion or contraception is not popular, and we should absolutely make Republicans own their extreme hard right turn.

I also hope this will be a moment of reckoning for my Senate colleagues who have resisted our calls to abolish the filibuster and codify the right to abortion into federal law.

The mixture of emotions this week is overwhelming. I’ve felt furious, horrified and scared about what will happen when this decision becomes law. But what I will not be is defeated. I hope you will not be either.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to have an impact right now, please consider donating to the National Network of Abortion Funds to help eliminate logistical and financial barriers to this critical health care.

Your support will make an immediate difference for women living in states where abortion will be banned immediately following the Court's final decision — even in cases of rape or incest. Help us ensure access to abortion without shame or stigma.

Take care of yourself and be kind to each other this week. But don’t give up. I’m going to keep fighting, and we’ll need you with us.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
