Friend, you might not even know if your drinking water comes from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, or groundwater. Groundwater, which is pumped from underground and distributed through pipes or canals, accounts for between 40% and 60% (!!!) of the state’s water supply. Some communities, often low-income and communities of color in the Central Valley, rely on groundwater exclusively. And therein lies the problem. Big Oil, Big Gas, and Big Agriculture are overpumping and emptying groundwater, which hurts the environment and leaves many communities with either contaminated water or no water period. There is an unfortunate lack of local and state accountability when it comes to water. And as drought worsens, there are few, if any, protections in place for California’s depleted groundwater. The solution? Put the power back in the hands of people living and working in these communities. Starting next week, we’ll be holding virtual text banks Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings all the way through the June 7 election. Text banks are a fun, effective form of organizing, and you can participate from the comfort of your own home! Friend, I hope you will join us at a virtual text bank to help make sure everyone in our community votes in the June primary and help us grow support for water equity >> Thanks for being with us, |
