Dear John,
I am writing to you with some disappointing news today. After a hard-fought primary race, NIAC Action endorsee Nina Turner did not win her primary election for Ohio’s 11th Congressional district last night.
Nina was defeated by an incumbent member of congress who is part of an anti-diplomacy contingency trying to derail efforts to reseal the Iran nuclear deal. In the days leading up to the primary election, a dark money group poured half a million dollars into the race to defeat Nina. This is on top of the millions of dollars spent to attack Nina by AIPAC and DMFI– two interconnected groups that are pro-war and anti-diplomacy.
Despite not getting the outcome we hoped for, we are incredibly proud to have supported Nina’s race. Here’s why: Nina ran on a platform of people-first policy. She was committed to empowering all communities in her district, including the Iranian-American community. She was adamantly in favor of diplomacy, and was going to fight in Congress to ensure we find peaceful solutions with Iran rather than lead us down a path towards war. NIAC Action is steadfast in our commitment to elect leaders like her to office at every level of government so that we're always building our community's political power.
Thank you for standing with us and fighting for candidates that will work for us and with us, rather than against us. We won’t let this moment defeat us, we will use this moment as fuel for our fight the next time.
Onward,
Nilofar Ganjaie
Deputy Executive Director, NIAC Action
