Organize for a brighter future

Indivisibles,

As you likely know, on Monday, a draft opinion was leaked from the Supreme Court confirming our worst fears -- This illegitimate, Republican Court is going to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that has stood for five decades defending the right to an abortion. With this draft, we see the culmination of Mitch McConnell’s dishonest manipulation of Senate procedure that ultimately led to Donald Trump appointing three far-right conservative justices to the bench.

The Supreme Court is not the apolitical check on elected leaders that it was meant to be.

The leaked ruling, written by arch-conservative Justice Samuel Alito, goes even further than we feared, stating that Roe was “egregiously wrong” when it was decided, and that there is no fundamental right to an abortion because it is not “deeply rooted in this nation’s history and tradition.” Guess which other constitutional rights meet this same description according to Alito? Access to birth control, gay marriage, interracial marriage, and any private sexual relationship which Republicans may deem immoral, to name a few.

It is clear that the Republican Court is looking to revoke any right granted to the American people that does not explicitly line up with what a group of white, mostly slave-owning men decided was necessary in 1789. This does not stop at abortion. Republicans are coming for any of the implicit freedoms that we have worked so hard to gain for women, for LGBTQ+ people, for people of color, and every other marginalized group in this country.

We are not looking at a step backwards, we are looking at a sprint back in time to when the only bodies granted autonomy in this country were land-owning white men.

The leaked decision is not final, and an official ruling will not come until this summer. But we have been given a glimpse into the future and it shows us that we must act. Here’s how we fight back today:

  1. Sign up here to get involved in our Give No Ground program to ensure Democrats hold power in November. We need to make every conservative politician in this country pay for their complicity in this decision. That means doing everything in our power to elect more progressive Democrats in November. Roe may fall this summer, but our elected officials will still have the authority to make it federal law and to expand the court so that this transparently Republican farce can cause no more damage. We must elect enough progressive Democrats to do it. (To be clear -- we mean a real progressive trifecta, not one that depends on Joe Manchin).
  2. Chip in $10 or more to back our efforts to Give No Ground in November. We are running a comprehensive, grassroots campaign to back Democrats in battleground districts to ensure we hold our majority. That means building the infrastructure to knock on doors, make phone calls, send text messages, run ads, and more to increase a Democratic majority. We will be throwing everything we have behind electing a more progressive Congress, and we need your help to do it.
  3. Sign up today for our Deep Canvassing Training on Tuesday, May 10 at 6pm ET/3pm PT. 75% of people say decisions on abortion should be left to the woman and her doctor and 80% of the American public thinks abortion should be legal. Those numbers mean nothing if we don’t know how to convince people to vote. Sign up today for a 1.5 hour training on the foundations of deep canvassing and to practice the skills needed to move inconsistent or conflicted voters to action.
  4. Keep your eyes open for a national day of mobilization being planned for next Saturday, May 14. Now is the time to be visible. Now is the time to be loud. We need to let our friends, our families, our neighbors, and the world know that we will not sit idly by while we watch a fanatic conservative minority revoke our fundamental rights to bodily safety and autonomy.
  5. Remember, Roe v. Wade is still the law of the land today. We know what is coming. We have been given a glimpse of the future. But, until the final ruling is made, your basic rights have not changed since last week. If you need care, contact a doctor or a clinic. Do not allow this leak to deprive you of your rights before it is official.

This is a grim week for our country. When the ruling is official, 26 states could move quickly to ban abortion. 13 of those states already have trigger laws in effect that will immediately revoke our right to make medical decisions about our own bodies. We are watching as fanatic conservatism becomes the law of the land.

But we can prevail. There is a path forward. It will not be quick. It will not be easy. But, in the end, we owe it to our children, our families, our friends, and, most importantly, ourselves to refuse to allow this country to be dragged backwards.

Many of us felt a great weight was lifted in November of 2020. We saw a light at the end of the tunnel. Well, the light is still a little further off and it’s time to recommit ourselves to getting there. Use this link to find your local Indivisible group if you’ve fallen out of touch. Reach out. Get involved. Make a pledge right now to bring a new friend with you.

We will escape this darkness together. Now is the time to get to work.
