John, we have to shout it from the rooftops: Politicians have no place making personal medical decisions for us. Abortion bans do not end abortion. Bodily autonomy is a fundamental human right.
I’m deeply disturbed by the Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade and ending our constitutional right to access abortion care — a right women have relied on for nearly 50 years.
Roe will fall, and Republicans will seek to ban abortion in every state where they have the power. We can’t count on the courts to save us. But together, we can defend our fundamental rights against the GOP’s radicalism state by state. If we prevent the GOP from gaining a veto-proof supermajority in Raleigh, Roy’s veto power WILL uphold abortion rights here in North Carolina. You can read more in his message from yesterday.

Last night, we received the clearest signal yet that the right-wing majority of the Supreme Court intends to overturn Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to abortion access, leaving the decision of whether to ban abortions to Congress and state governments.
Republicans have sought this outcome for years. Now, they will end abortion protections in every state where they have the power to do so. But not in North Carolina, as long as I have enough Democrats in the legislature to uphold my veto. Without the protection of Roe, safe abortion care will become inaccessible to far too many. But make no mistake: Abortion will not end; it will simply return to the back alley. Pregnant women will return to unsafe abortion methods.
John, abortion care is health care, and health care is a right. I will do everything in my power to protect the right of North Carolinians to determine the outcome of their pregnancies and assert control over their bodies.
