Health Justice Highlights

Hi John,

This month we celebrated 35 years of working towards health for all! Read some of our recent successes supporting some of the most marginalised communities in rural locations around the world below.

In addition to our work with communities, we also campaign to address the root causes of poor health. As the UK’s General Election date moves closer, we’ve been closely following how the issues we've been campaigning on over recent years feature in Party manifestos. Here's a few of the issues of interest to us so far:

Supporting young entrepreneurs in Rwanda

Odette proudly displays her newly acquired tailoring skills to the local Mayor and government officials who attended the event.

Two weeks ago in the Nyaruguru District of Rwanda, we hosted a graduation event for more than 300 young people who have completed training programs set up by local HPA staff, our partners and community members. The program helps to support students with entrepreneurial and practical skills training to help them find secure work. By the time they had graduated, 120 young people had already turned themselves into entrepreneurs and became self-employed, while 86 had been hired by local businesses.

Implementing new emergency referral systems in Somaliland

The new Referral Centre at Boroma Regional Hospital for operating emergency hotlines and ambulance services.

Alongside our partners and funders, our colleagues in rural Somaliland have created the first emergency referral systems to be set up in these areas. This system makes it easier to take patients from local health clinics to regional hospitals which have better facilities for treating severe cases. Since launching in April 2019, this new system has carried out 385 emergency referrals, and has helped to prevent many potential deaths. It’s also strengthened the overall effectiveness of the health services available, and helped communities feel more supported - particularly mothers who experience complications during childbirth.

Helping farmers bounce-back from flooding in Laos

Our team in Laos have recently partnered with the government to provide training, equipment, and flood resistance seeds to farmers affected by the ongoing flooding in Laos – where people continue to feel the devastating effects of the human-made ‘climate crisis’. We are working with farmers to create seed banks so that they're less vulnerable to seasonal changes and have established farmer’s clubs and agricultural committees, so that the knowledge people share amongst each other can be passed on to future generations.

David Sanders Memorial Lecture

Please join us on December 4th to celebrate the phenomenal life of our former Special Advisor David Sanders, who dedicated his career to medicine, health and social justice.

In addition to reflecting on the personal, clinical, academic and political dimensions of David’s life, we will discuss their relevance to a variety of contemporary challenges facing global public health in Africa and in the UK.

The NHS post-Brexit & Unfair Trade Deals

With the recent debate over the fate of the NHS in post-Brexit trade deals [[link removed]], what impact can unfair trade deals have on health? As an international NGO working on the root causes of poverty and its effects, we’ve seen how an unfair international trade system has enormous impacts on the health of people.
