An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) spokesperson recently touted “the importance of pollinators for healthy ecosystems and a sustainable food supply,” and assured that the EPA “is working aggressively to protect pollinators, including bees.”
If that’s true, why is the EPA preparing to extend the use of four neonicotinoid pesticides known to be devastating to bees, butterflies and other insects for the next 15 years? Because of pressure from Big Ag.

The EPA is expected to extend the use of four insecticides that are classified as neonicotinoids (neonics) — the most widely-used class of insecticides pushed by Big Ag — despite the fact that the EPA knows these chemicals harm pollinators.
Ironically, neonics were developed as a "safer" alternative to previous pesticides. But mounting evidence suggests just the opposite: Neonicotinoids and other pesticides are a major contributor to bees’ drastic decline. They limit bees' reproductive success and impair their natural defense systems, leading to uncontrollable shaking, paralysis and death.
The European Union has banned the use of toxins linked to widespread insect declines, as have several U.S. states and localities. But the EPA is caving to giant agribusiness interests and allowing them to continue using these killer chemicals.
