Jack, the District of Columbia’s government is considering a bill that could have major implications on elections for the district.
Bill 24-672 allows unsecure internet voting in D.C. As recently as 2021, tech experts have argued that we are a long way from being able to securely vote via the internet. Last year, the leading association of computer scientists sent a letter to the National Institute of Science and Technology stating that “at this writing all internet-connected voting technologies and systems which return an electronic or digital ballot remain insecure.”

The city is all too familiar with the risks of online voting. In 2010, D.C. launched one of the country’s first Internet voting pilot projects. Researchers from the University of Michigan revealed the vulnerability of the program by hacking it and reprogramming the website to alter votes and play the University of Michigan fight song. The district also recently revealed its technical shortcomings through its inability to manage a vaccine registration website.
D.C. residents are strong, opinionated, and proud. The voices of D.C. residents matter more than any outside influence that is undoubtedly hell-bent on manipulating the district's elections and making a case for why the city should not be granted statehood. The City Council and Mayor Bowser must hear us loud and clear: we say NO to bill 24-672.
