War in Ukraine deepens the food crisis for 15 million people in Horn of Africa. Give to the Matching Gift Challenge before May 10.

"Horn of Africa prepares for their most severe drought in 40 years" ... "Drought In Kenya: Acute lack of water is pushing millions towards hunger" ... "Ukraine war exacerbates crisis in Horn of Africa"

These are some of the recent headlines on the worsening crisis in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia. The region has suffered from three failed rain seasons in a row due to climate change. Right now, it is bracing for a fourth.

The drought is decimating crops and livestock, which are families’ primary sources of food and income. Shortages of water are forcing people from their homes. Competition for food, water, and other scarce resources is leading to increases in violent conflict.

Mercy Corps is working to alleviate hunger and meet immediate basic needs. We are providing water, dietary supplements, and veterinary services to pastoralists’ remaining livestock to help secure people’s livelihoods.
In a camp for displaced families in Somalia, Farey Issack Borow collects water from a tap installed by Mercy Corps as part of our emergency response in the region.
The war in Ukraine is compounding the crisis. Ukraine is one of the world’s leading producers of wheat, corn, and sunflower oil. The conflict has halted much of the agricultural production, leading to a severe shortage and soaring food prices. In Somalia, for example, the prices of cooking oil, beans, rice, sugar, and flour have nearly doubled.

In this time of crisis for millions around the world, a group of generous Mercy Corps donors have already given to encourage supporters like you to make a matching gift. We’ve set a goal to raise $465,000 by May 10.

Giving to Mercy Corps is a tangible, powerful action you can take to help people overcome challenges like hunger, poverty, and conflict — can we count on your support for people and families facing urgent challenges in 40+ countries around the world?
