"Horn of Africa prepares for their most severe drought in 40 years" ... "Drought In Kenya: Acute lack of water is pushing millions towards hunger" ... "Ukraine war exacerbates crisis in Horn of Africa" These are some of the recent headlines on the worsening crisis in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia. The region has suffered from three failed rain seasons in a row due to climate change. Right now, it is bracing for a fourth. The drought is decimating crops and livestock, which are families’ primary sources of food and income. Shortages of water are forcing people from their homes. Competition for food, water, and other scarce resources is leading to increases in violent conflict. Mercy Corps is working to alleviate hunger and meet immediate basic needs. We are providing water, dietary supplements, and veterinary services to pastoralists’ remaining livestock to help secure people’s livelihoods.
In a camp for displaced families in Somalia, Farey Issack Borow collects water from a tap installed by Mercy Corps as part of our emergency response in the region.
