Friend — in case you missed it, we wanted to share some environmental news:

In the leadup to Earth Day, the Biden-Harris administration announced several new environmental reforms that will protect ecosystems and improve environmental review of projects that could threaten people’s health and local communities.
  • President Biden issued an executive order recognizing the need to protect mature and old-growth forests from deforestation. These environments store huge amounts of carbon, provide clean drinking water for communities, and serve as essential habitat for many at-risk species.
  • The White House Council on Environmental Quality issued a final rule reinstating key environmental review protections in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

This is big — NEPA requires that projects like pipelines, highways, and drilling operations be evaluated for their environmental impact — and gives affected communities the chance to give input on these projects before they can proceed. Before Trump gutted it, NEPA had been one of our most important environmental laws, and now, it’s partly restored, with more improvements on the way.
  • The Biden-Harris administration announced the America the Beautiful Challenge, a $1 billion initiative to fund conservation and restoration programs that accelerate land, water, and wildlife conservation efforts across the country.
These kinds of reforms don’t just happen, Friend. They happen when the environmental movement shows up in a major way — and that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Make no mistake — our elected leaders need to do much more. This month, LCV is in an all-out push to demand that Congress and the White House enact the most important investments in climate, justice, jobs, and clean energy in history without delay. We are showing up where it matters most and making it clear to lawmakers that the time to act on climate change is now.

Members of the environmental movement rallied in front of the White House on April 23 to push for historic climate legislation.

As LCV president, I know that our movement can win, because we’ve done it before. We organized, we voted, and we elected lawmakers and an administration who would make the environment a priority. Now, we must hold them accountable to turn their climate promises into reality. We won’t let up until we enact climate action into law – and I know you won’t either.

Onward,

Gene Karpinski
President
