News leaked that the Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, dealing a crushing blow to abortion rights and setting women’s rights back over 50 years.
This is bad, xxxxxx. This decision could have repercussions beyond what any of us can fully comprehend, and this may only be the beginning. Tomorrow it could be Brown v. Board, same-sex marriage, or any other uncodified protections.
I have a wife and a daughter who live in a state with a tragically high black maternal mortality rate, so this pending decision is personal to me. Anyone who has been paying attention could see where this Court was heading, and we know it is going to be a long fight for states like Georgia.
There’s no question that we must do whatever we can to fight for women’s rights, and organizations like NARAL, SisterSong, and the Feminist Women's Health Center have spent years preparing themselves for this very scenario. Now, it’s our job to stand with them as they execute their contingency plans and fight to protect women’s health and safety.
These are scary times for women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and for anyone who depends on their right to privacy to live their lives. As Lieutenant Governor, I will deliver a legal path to make sure every Georgian is able to live with freedom, dignity, and choice.
Thank you for your support and for standing in solidarity with women in Georgia and across the country.
