Dear John,
Factory farms are decimating our food system. Our grocery store shelves are filled with meat from animals fed a regular diet of pesticide-intensive GMO corn and soy, routine antibiotics and other drugs. And Sanderson Farms is trying to sneak its factory farmed chicken onto your plate with "100% natural" labels.
In truth, their chickens are raised and slaughtered in inhumane, polluting factory farms. They’re regularly given antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals throughout their lives. Nothing about them is “natural.”
But it’s not too late to hold Sanderson accountable! With your help, John, we can pressure Sanderson to change its behavior and stop lying to consumers.
Factory farmed chicken isn’t “100% natural”: Tell Sanderson to stop lying to customers!
The CDC and other leading scientific and health organizations have identified the routine use of antibiotics in livestock production as a major contributor to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic resistant infections kill at least 35,000 people a year. Roughly 70-80 percent of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used in livestock production.
Friends of the Earth’s work on this issue has made a big difference. Under pressure from our lawsuit, last year, the company announced that it was changing its policy to stop administering some medically important antibiotics for routine disease prevention. But this is not enough.
Sanderson is still routinely using a variety of antibiotics on its chickens throughout their lives. And yet they’re still claiming to be selling “100% natural” chicken. False and misleading advertising practices are unlawful in the United States.
Now, while our lawsuit is on appeal, consumers are rising up and just filed a class action against Sanderson for the same violations of law.
The time is now to demand that Sanderson either produce chicken that meets consumer expectations for “100% natural,” or stop lying to consumers. There is power in numbers -- can we count on your voice?
Fight Big Ag’s misinformation efforts: Tell Sanderson to stop calling its factory farmed chicken “100% natural”!
Mega-corporations like Sanderson are gaining control over our food system, and they’re abusing their massive power to set the standard for how the industry should operate.
Calling factory-farmed chicken “100% natural” is just another attempt to increase corporate control of our food system. If Sanderson gets away with spreading this misleading information, it will signal to other Big Ag giants that they can do the same.
We need your help holding Sanderson accountable for spreading misleading information. Can we count on your support, John?
