I want to thank all of you across greater Cleveland and so many more across the country who supported this upstart grassroots campaign with your time, your passion, and your dollars. I can tell you that this team left it all on the field.
We fought through the $3 million in outside money from every corporate interest you can name: the oil companies, the drug companies, the crypto speculators, and even Trump donors. We went door to door talking to the people of Greater Cleveland. But all the hours of our volunteers, the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff and the generosity of our small dollar donors, just could not – on this particular day – beat the onslaught of corporate spending that swamped this district and its people.
This election was never about me nor was it about Shontel Brown. These outside corporate special interests who not only invaded this community but who are doing it in community after community are trying to keep you from getting the higher wages you need. They are trying to keep you from getting relief from high gas prices, high food prices and high medicine prices. They are trying to keep you from getting quality, affordable health care or a higher education. But most importantly they are trying to rob this community and this nation of hope – hope that things can be better, fairer and more just.
They want us to believe that the future that all of us dream about for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren is just not possible.
But we in this movement know better.
We know there are so many fights that need to be fought and to be won. We know that we must and we can raise the minimum wage.
We know that we must and we can have a universal Medicare for All system.
We know that we must and we can have an energy future that does not destroy Mother Earth.
And we know that must and we can ensure justice and equity for all people.
Just in the last few days we have seen that the right wing U.S. Supreme Court is prepared to take away the freedom of a woman to control her own body.
So as we reflect on this loss tonight, please, please, please stay with me as we continue our Justice Journey together. The powerful corporate interests may still be able to buy elections but do not let them rob you of your hope because if they do, the Trumps of the world and worse will win.
We need to keep standing together. Fight side by side. And some battles we may lose. But the larger war for economic, racial, social and environmental justice is one that we must and will win.
God bless all of you, and again thank you to the thousands who voted for us, who worked for us, who volunteered for us and who donated to us. Tomorrow is a new day but the struggle before us will be more urgent than ever.
We all must be in that struggle if we are to take this country back from corporate special interests who today hold so much wealth and so much power.
We can be sad but we are resilient and we remain defiant.
With these hands,
Nina 💜
