Announcing WIIS Global's New Senior Fellows

WIIS Global is pleased to welcome Dr. Joan Johnson-Freeseand Brenda Oppermannas Senior Fellows, effective June 1, 2022.


Dr. Joan Johnson-Freeseserved as a University Professor and Chair of the National Security Affairs Department at the Naval War College (NWC) between 2002-2022. She has also been part of the Government Department faculty of Harvard Extension School and Harvard Summer School since 2004, where she teaches courses on Women, Peace & Security, Leadership in War and Peace, and Grand Strategy and US National Security.


Brenda Oppermannserves as an Associate Professor at the U.S. Naval War College and as Chief GameChanger at GameChangers 360, a social enterprise dedicated to creating positive change through gender equity. A senior advisor and subject matter expert, Brenda has 30+ years of experience -- including more than seven (7) years in conflict-affected countries -- working with DOD, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, USAID, the United Nations, U.S. Institute of Peace, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), NATO, and assorted NGOs.

Safety and Security of Nuclear Facilities in Conflict Zones: The War in Ukraine


On April 29th, WIIS, the Embassy of Liechtenstein, Washington, DC, and the Black Sea Women in Nuclear (BSWN) network held a virtual policy roundtable highlighting the impact and intersection of gender and nuclear security and safety. Experts in the field and members of the BSWN assessed the conflict in Ukraine in the wake of military hostilities, reported on the current status of nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, and provided an overview of the BSWN's work and its transborder cooperation. H.E. Ambassador Georg Sparberof Liechtenstein provided introductory remarks, and Leslie Hayden, Counselor for Nuclear Affairs, US Mission to International Organizations in Vienna, gave the keynote address.

The Politics of Fear: Right-Wing Anti-Gender and Anti-Vaccination Narratives


Anti-lockdown, anti-mask, and anti-vaccine talking points have become a new battleground for the far right. While the overlap between COVID-19 and far-right activism has been discussed by both journalists and academics, there has been little to no discussion of the similarity with anti-gender movements. This blog compares anti-gender discourses to the discourses that underline recent anti-COVID movements to provide new insights into the role of gender in the current anti-vaccine mobilizations.

Women In International Security Switzerland and the UN Institute for Disarmament Research join forces to launch UNIDIR-WIIS CoLab

Women In International Security Switzerland and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) recently launched a new CoLab to foster collaborative community building for women working in international peace and security in Geneva and across Switzerland. The UNIDIR-WIIS CoLab aims to promote scholarship, dialogue, and networking for women in disarmament and global security.

The Columbia Journal of International Affairs is accepting submissions for publication in its 150th issue. Submissions should explore the causes of fragilities within the state, the system, and society, and their long-lasting effects, especially in confronting challenges and problems that may be or become issues of global concern in the future.

Call for Papers: Digital Workshop on Localizing the Women Peace & Security Agenda Across Multiple Governance Challenges


The Global Transformations and Governance Challenges Programme at Leiden University will be hosting a digital workshop on January 26-27, 2023. This workshop will bring together scholars working on the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. Participants will be required to present a conference paper related to the topic of ‘Localizing the WPS Agenda’.x

Call for Applications: Sylke Tempel Essay Prize


In 2022, Women In International Security Germany (WIIS.de) and the journal Internationale Politik (IP) are hosting the fourth annual Sylke Tempel Essay Prize. The prize commemorates journalist, publicist, and mentor Sylke Tempel (1963 - 2017), chair of WIIS.de and editor-in chief of IP, Germany's leading foreign policy journal. This year’s theme is: "Digitization and networking are increasingly determining international thinking and action.” The competition is open to women 35 and younger. Applications are due June 30, 2022, and can be submitted in German or English. The winner will be awarded €1,500 in prize money, and their essay will be published in the June 2022 issue of IP.
