Councilmember Trayon White's Statement Regarding U.S. Supreme Court’s Draft Opinion To Overturn Roe v. Wade
(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Councilmember Trayon White, Sr. regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's draft opinion indicating the Supreme Court may strike down the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision:
"The Roe v. Wade decision made in 1973 affirmed a woman's constitutional right to make decisions determining what happens to her body when pregnant. To think that the Supreme Court would consider overturning this decision is abhorrent and directly impacts women's equality and autonomy. This decision will have devastating impacts on women across the country, especially among low-income, Black, Brown, immigrant, and disabled women. Reproductive freedom is a human right. I will work to protect women's rights in the District of Columbia and ensure they have the freedom to make healthcare decisions for their bodies and circumstances," stated Councilmember Trayon White, Sr.

Metro to improve service on the Green and Yellow lines beginning next Monday
Metro will increase service on the Green and Yellow lines beginning Monday, May 2, to meet ridership demand as more railcars become available.
Beginning Monday, train frequencies will increase from every 20 minutes to every 15 minutes on the Green and Yellow lines, meaning stations serviced by both lines – from Greenbelt to L’Enfant Plaza – will see trains every seven to eight minutes. The Green and Yellow lines were chosen for service improvements to mitigate crowding due to high ridership, especially during peak hours.
Red Line trains continue to operate every 10 minutes, and Blue, Orange, and Silver line trains continue to operate every 20 minutes, with more frequent service at stations that are served by multiple lines throughout the system.
Ridership on Metro has steadily increased over the past few months as more customers return to the workplace and enjoy leisure activities throughout the region. Weekday ridership on Metrorail this month is averaging about 230,000 trips, more than double the ridership of April 2021.
With more customers returning, Metro continues to do its part to ensure safety on the system, including frequent cleanings, improved air circulation and filtration, and providing free masks at rail stations and on buses.
Metro encourages all customers to be mindful of the following tips to maximize their experience:

- Metro can help you plan - Use our Trip Planner to help you determine the best route to your destination.
- Determine when your train or bus will arrive - Use Next Arrivals for real-time Metrorail or Metrobus arrival times to minimize wait times on station platforms and at bus stops.
- Give yourself additional time - Allow an additional five to seven minutes in your travel plans to avoid missing your train or bus.
- Go Mobile – SmarTrip for iPhone and Android makes paying for Metro easy. Download our app, then tap & go wherever you use SmarTrip - for Metrobus, Metrorail, and parking.

Birdhouse Library Is Installed In Ward 8 Valley Green Neighborhood.
On Saturday, April 30th, Councilmember Trayon White joined the Metropolitan Capital City Group at the community center, 1233 Valley Street, SE for a ribbon cutting ceremony of the Ward 8 Birdhouse Library.
The Metropolitan Capital City Group installed one large birdhouse library to bring the magic of reading to the community. This program is geared to encourage and make accessible books to families, especially the youth, in Ward 8. The books will be maintained and replenished on a regular basis.

1) “Project Briggs, Incorporated Second Annual Pride by the River Recognition Resolution of 2022”
Co-Introducers: CM Nadeau, Henderson, Cheh, McDuffie, Allen
Recognizes and honors Project Briggs, Incorporated for their second annual official DC Black Pride health and wellness event, “Pride by the River” on Monday, May 30, 2022.
2) “Displaced Owner of Destroyed Property Tax Relief Act of 2022”
Co-Introducer: CM Lewis George
Requires the Office of Chief Financial Officer and the Office of Tax and Revenue to establish standards providing tax relief for displaced owners of destroyed property during the period for which the lot is being rehabilitated.
3) “Collective Faith Community Historic Contribution Inclusion Amendment Act of 2022”
Co-Introducers: CM Bonds and Allen
Amends the State Education Establishment Act of 2000 to require the Office of the State Superintendent of Education to develop a curriculum for secondary institutions that includes the historic contributions of Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and any other collective community of faith that helped shape America in history.
4) “Immigrant, Refugee and Asylum Seeker Rights Education Act of 2022”
Co-Introducer: CM Bonds
Requires the Department of Human Services and the District of Columbia Office of Refugee Resettlement to establish a program to educate immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and other non-residents of their rights under the United States Constitution and District of Columbia Law.
5) “Teacher Appreciation Week Recognition Resolution of 2022”
Co-Introducers: Chairman Mendelson, CMs Silverman, Allen, McDuffie, Pinto, Lewis-George, Nadeau, Cheh, R. White
Honors the teachers of the District of Columbia for their tireless work and integral contributions to the growth of learners of all ages, to recognize the month of May 2022 as Teacher Appreciation Month, and to declare the week of Monday, May 2 to Friday, May 6 as Teacher Appreciation Week in the District of Columbia.
6) “Public Charter School Applicant Amendment Act of 2022"
Co-Introducer: CM Bonds
Amends the District of Columbia School Reform Act of 1995 to require eligible applicants who file a petition to establish a public charter school or open a new campus to include information about enrollment and capacity at other campuses which the applicant operates; to require the eligible chartering authority to deny petitions when an applicant operates another campus and the enrollment at the time of application is less than 70% of 17 the capacity at that campus.
