I've been predicting this moment for a long time, John.
The Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. If the court’s opinion doesn’t change, it represents a major disregard to 50 years of precedent and will have consequences across the country.
Right now, we have a right to be outraged -- but we also need to plan.
That’s why I’m asking you to split a donation today between myself and EMILY’s List, the leading national organization for electing pro-choice women. Your contribution will power my work to protect a woman’s right to choose in the U.S. Senate and will help elect pro-choice candidates who will do the same.
If the Court does overturn Roe v. Wade, there are three things we can expect to happen:
First, in over a dozen states, laws already on the books will “trigger” the moment Roe is overturned. Abortion will immediately be banned, and the decision to terminate a pregnancy will no longer be between a woman and her doctor.
Second, state legislatures in many more states may decide to pass new laws restricting abortion. We’ve already seen significant movement in this direction, which will only accelerate.
And third, the only option to protect abortion rights will be for Congress to act. Unless we pass national legislation to codify Roe v. Wade, women seeking reproductive care will face a patchwork of laws and restrictions across the country.
This all means that the upcoming elections this November will be more important than any other elections in our lifetimes. Americans who believe in choice will have to vote like we’ve never voted before.
We have a long fight ahead of us ,John. If you’re with me, then please: Split a contribution now between myself and EMILY’s List to support and elect pro-choice candidates who will work to codify Roe v. Wade into national law.
