A study in the Washington Post found I was the only Frontline Democrat running in 2020 who held my extremist Republican opponent accountable on pro-choice issues. I spoke up vocally in support of pro-choice policies, and I beat an NRA and Trump backed Republican.

John – as a woman in America, waking up to the SCOTUS news today made me feel frustrated, angry, and a little bit hopeless. Make no mistake, women are under attack.

But, based on my initial election to Congress in 2018, I do have some hope for the fight to protect abortion rights ahead. Let me explain…

In 2018, the prognosticators and the pundits gave me no shot of winning a toss-up seat in Congress. I ran on my own story – I told voters about my fight for gun violence prevention after my son was shot and killed, and my experience in the healthcare system as a two-time breast cancer survivor. I also made sure to highlight that my Republican opponent at the time voted to allow throwing doctors in jail for performing abortions.

That’s right, I went on offense for pro-choice policies – and I won. Even when many people told me it was politically dangerous - I stood up for my values and I won.

In 2022, we must continue this fight.

Here’s what I believe: The decisions a woman makes about her body should be between her and her doctor. Period. Republicans are attempting to control women’s bodies and make abortion illegal in a shameless attempt to rewrite history.
