Urgent news from your Seattle DSA Local Council.
Your Local Council just agreed unanimously to postpone our chapter meeting for one week (to Tuesday May 10 – RSVP for the rescheduled meeting here) so that we can instead mobilize the chapter for a strong DSA presence at the abortion rallies starting at 5pm at Westlake.
The scale of the Supreme Court’s assault on reproductive rights is a clarion call for a massive fightback and DSA has a vital role to play in building the socialist feminist wing of that movement. We will fight to build the largest possible protests with a broad array of forces to pressure the Supreme Court to back down and uphold Roe vs. Wade. But as socialist feminists we will also fight for a larger agenda that includes Medicare for All which includes free reproductive services as well as gender affirming healthcare; free high-quality universal childcare; paid universal family leave; and for the Democrats to immediately pass the Women´s Health Protection Act.
Specifically the LC agreed:
We urge all members to come to the protests tonight (starting at 5pm at Westlake) to show support and to have a high DSA profile to help build a strong socialist feminist wing of the movement. When you arrive, please check in at the DSA banner and table. We also want to make sure we collect lots of signatures for the Social Housing ballot initiative and Whole Washington.*
Tonight's meeting was important for the chapter and many members put a lot of work into it. With that in mind we thought we would be doing a disservice to that work if we went ahead with a smaller meeting tonight that was unable to meet quorum. If we had held a meeting tonight, we do not believe it would have been successful. We also believed the rallies tonight are important for the Gallardo campaign and the Social Housing ballot initiative to show their solidarity by having a strong presence, and would be an opportunity to collect signatures.
There are multiple rallies tonight. The first is at 5pm at Westlake, and another called by Councilmember Sawant at 6pm at Westlake. We urge DSA members to meet up at 5pm at Westlake at the DSA table, and then stay for the 6pm rally which looks like it will be larger.
The LC agreed to endorse the event organized by Council Member Sawant at 6pm. We are asking CM Sawant that both Seattle DSA and the Stephanie Gallardo campaigns have prominent speakers at her rally. We also agreed we would ask for CM Sawant to meet with the LC soon (and on a regular basis going forward) to discuss and coordinate her work as a DSA member elected to office, as was agreed at our chapter convention in March.
*On DSA members collecting signatures for the Social Housing ballot initiative and Whole Washington. The chapter was going to vote tonight on prioritizing and endorsing these campaigns. Since we are postponing the vote on that, the LC unanimously agreed that Seattle DSA members could collect signatures for these campaigns at Seattle DSA tables and as Seattle DSA members. Our bylaws allow for this special authorization.
Rescheduling our chapter meeting to Tuesday May 10 is a disruption that will require a push to mobilize members to have a quorum at the May 10th meeting. The LC is asking members, especially the members who suggested rescheduling, to help with turnout. Please contact LC member Chris P to get plugged in to that. Thanks! And make sure to RSVP for the rescheduled meeting here
