Dear Friend --
Last night a draft opinion on the
Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case was leaked
to the press. According to the 100 page opinion obtained by Politico
and written by Justice Samuel Alito, the Court has voted to strike
down the Roe v. Wade decision. Chief Justice John Roberts
confirmed the draft's authenticity, and strongly condemned the
leaker's betrayal.
In the draft, the majority opinion states:
"Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was
exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences.
And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion
issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened
division."
We agree (as you can see from the amicus
brief filed by our sister organization).
If the
draft opinion holds, this means that the American people will be able
to decide the issue of abortion through their elected state officials.
Unfortunately, as Carolina Journal
reports, "The current status of the law is that abortion is
legal for any reason until viability in North Carolina — or
after viability at an abortionist’s discretion. That would be what the
law returns to if Roe is scraped. Under that scenario, North
Carolina would have the most liberal abortion laws of any nearby state
except for Virginia. . . . Updating North Carolina’s law
would become a priority for pro-life advocates in a post-Roe
world."

We believe the people of North Carolina have the right to decide
the issue by enacting laws that protect unborn children and honor
women, and that is exactly what we are prepared to do. If Roe
and Casey are overturned, as the draft opinion indicates, we
must build consensus for the strongest protections possible for unborn
children and women in North Carolina, and we are ready for this moment
in history.
We must also continue to support pregnant women and
children in need, as the pro-life movement has already been doing in
our state for decades. There are hundreds of pro-life pregnancy
centers, thousands of churches, and millions of North Carolina
citizens who are here to provide a safety net for women who experience
unplanned pregnancies and their babies. The pro-life movement is here
to love and serve both mother and child.
We
have a lot of work to do preparing for the scenario where—LORD
willing—Roe v. Wade is finally overturned. If you support our
work fighting for North Carolina's unborn, would you consider making a
needed pro-life donation of $25, $50, $100, or more
today?
