Friends,
By now, you’ve probably seen the reporting that the Supreme Court is ready to overturn Roe.
First of all, let me be clear: while this draft has been authenticated, it’s not yet an official ruling. Abortion is still legal and accessible in Virginia and in most states across the nation. And as Virginia law stands, even if Roe is overturned, there are no laws on the books to either immediately criminalize or outlaw abortion at the state level.
But I am not resting or waiting until we know more. The outcome is very likely: reproductive rights are on the chopping block for ALL women, including the countless women with dangerous pregnancies and those who have been victims of sexual abuse.
That’s why I’m advocating for us to codify Roe by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act – something I’ve been supporting for many years. I stood with my colleagues today on the Senate steps to reaffirm our commitment to getting this done.
For those of you who feel discouraged, disheartened, or scared: I hear you. This is a startling development with potentially grave consequences for millions. As always, you can trust that I’ll keep fighting for reproductive rights in the Senate. Just last week, I voted to stop efforts to restrict access to Title X funds for organizations that are providing comprehensive family planning services. Thanks to the outcome of this vote, our Virginia clinics will continue to be able to provide care to folks that need it without meddlesome and stringent intervention from the federal government.
I’ll keep voting and fighting to protect care.
Sincerely,
|
