Friend,
Like many of you, I woke up this morning disgusted and fearful for what a post- Roe future would mean for women across the country and here in Texas. It’s been over 8 months since this radical Court allowed Texas’s extreme near-total abortion ban to take effect and we’ve seen the devastating effects that this 6 week ban has had for Texan women, denying them access to needed health care and making doctors and health care providers afraid to do their jobs.
If the report we saw last night that the Supreme Court is poised to strike down Roe v. Wade is true, we have entered a new era in America. It would mean that 50 years of right-wing activism has resulted in the Court arriving at a position that 69% of Americans oppose. And Gov. Abbott’s “trigger law” will automatically make abortion illegal in Texas just 30 days after a SCOTUS ruling like the draft we saw yesterday.
We cannot return to a time when women could not make decisions about their own bodies. Abortion must be safe, legal, and accessibile in this country. The leaked draft shows a blatant disregard for 50 years of settled law and the fundamental rights of women. The House has passed legislation to codify Roe ’s protections into law, and the Senate must do so now as well — not acting is not an option.
Today is a tough day, but we can’t lose hope. Texas is the home of Sarah Weddington who argued Roe as a young lawyer, Cecile Richards, Sen. Wendy Davis and so many other brave women who have stood up for a woman’s right to choose. We have to keep fighting for a Texas and an America that respects the fundamental rights of all its citizens, and I’m so proud to be in this fight alongside all of you.
In solidarity,
Colin Allred
