For decades, extreme religious conservatives have tried relentlessly to overturn Roe v. Wade and prevent women from accessing critical reproductive health care — and now, their efforts have come to fruition.

Last night, news broke that the Supreme Court has indeed drafted an opinion that will overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, two landmark decisions protecting access to abortion care across the country.

The authenticity of the leaked opinion is not disputed; it seems to just be a question of when the Supreme Court will make it official. That means we are days or perhaps hours away from the revocation of federal rights that have protected women for the past half century. This will have devastating consequences for all women, but especially disadvantaged and poor women in conservative states where abortion is about to become unsafe, illegal, and inaccessible.

I am outraged, and you should be, too.

Not only will this be a terrible infringement on women’s rights, it will put many women’s lives in danger. Some might choose to get an unsafe abortion. Some might continue with a risky pregnancy. Millions of women would be left without access to critical health care services.

For those of you who are afraid, know this: abortion is still legal, it is still a right, and it is still available here in California.

And to my colleagues in Congress: This is not the end of our fight.
