Last night, we learned the Supreme Court drafted a decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Like so many others across the country, I wrestled with what this would mean. We’ve seen this coming for decades, but as a woman, a mother, and a lawyer, I am still shocked at last night’s news.
Women have fought for equal rights, and now, we’re seeing the gains we’ve made rolled back.
Fortunately, we have laws in New Jersey protecting Roe and reproductive freedom, but that’s not the case for many other states. In fact, many states have laws on the books that would go into effect if Roe is overturned, severely restricting access to reproductive care. Overturning Roe means abortion will be banned for millions of women, even in the cases of rape, incest, and the health of the mother.
Our founding fathers worried about the tyranny of the majority. But this isn’t the tyranny of the majority -- it’s the tyranny of the minority.
The majority of Americans support women making their own decisions about their bodies. Reversing Roe goes against the law and the will of the people.
But a select few -- on the Supreme Court and in legislatures across the country -- are rolling back protections that have been the law of the land for 50 years.
The choice is very clear going into November. If you care about things like women’s rights, voting rights, and access to health care, then we need to do something about it -- at the ballot box. I know this news can feel discouraging, but I’m asking you to channel those feelings into action. That’s what I intend to do.
Thank you for all you do,
Mikie
