Last night's revelation of a draft Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe v. Wade is jarring and, if it stands, will be an outrageous attack on women across America.
In far too many states, automatic trigger laws will go into effect the moment Roe v. Wade is overturned. In those states, abortion will go from a legal practice to a criminalized act in an instant.
I stand with the millions of women who are about to lose their constitutional right to abortion.
Last night's news was terrifying. It is unacceptable that a Supreme Court stacked by Donald Trump and Mitch McConell could rip up a long-standing constitutional precedent and eviscerate reproductive freedoms.
I was proud to vote in the House for a federal law protecting abortion nationwide. Now, the Senate must join us in acting before the Supreme Court ruling becomes final. I have always steadfastly stood with women to protect the right to seek and have an abortion.
Other long held rights could very well be on the chopping block, as right-wing activists look to the Supreme Court to attack marriage equality, access to birth control, and even interracial marriage.
The Senate must join the House and act now. And we must all work, organize, and fight as hard as we can in this upcoming election. We face a fundamental choice between those who believe in freedom and equality and those who do not.
