Dear Friend – it’s a difficult day.
Here at Groundwork, our hearts are heavy. We are thinking about everyone among us who has had an abortion, who has needed abortion care at some point in their lives, who is seeking reproductive care in this moment and who is facing the threat of their bodily autonomy being taken away.
ICYMI: A leaked document from the Supreme Court was released last night showing that a decision has been made and, unless something extraordinary happens, come June Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
What’s happening right now gets at the heart of Groundwork Project’s WHY. We know that conservatives have been organizing for this moment for literally decades – investing, organizing, and building anti-abortion power from the ground up. Roe’s path to today’s Supreme Court started in Mississippi, one of our first focus states. That’s why we are so committed to funding organizers on the ground in “red” regions – because they are our best and most important line of defense against the modern GOP’s agenda of extremism, injustice and oppression.
The only way to turn back the tide sweeping across our states and courts is to support the people on the ground, doing the work to defend reproductive rights where it is most at risk. Donate now to keep organizers in our partner states funded and on the frontlines.
While many of us in blue states bemoan a “dystopian” reality, should Roe fall, the truth is folks in states like Mississippi have been living in a post-Roe existence for years, facing myriad roadblocks to basic bodily autonomy, thanks to Republican leaders’ clutch on state power.
It’s a familiar story across the states where Groundwork chooses to show up. Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia and Oklahoma all have trigger laws that will go into immediate effect when this decision is passed down. In recent weeks, the Oklahoma legislature passed the most restrictive abortion ban in the nation, threatening any healthcare provider who performs an abortion with 10 years in prison and up to $100,000 in fines. They are not just targeting pregnant people, they are attacking healthcare itself.
So what can we do? Whatever we can to get resources, support, and spotlights on the red-state organizers and organizations fighting for reproductive rights every day – helping those in need access abortions, sharing reproductive health information and taking on their state legislators, because they have never had the luxury of relying on federal protections.
Groundwork Project is committed to providing sustained, year-round resources to organizers on the ground in the toughest political terrain out there. Donate now.
I want to make it clear, as of right now abortion is still legal in all 50 states. But that is about to change. And the GOP is cheering today because they spent DECADES organizing for this moment, from the ground up.
To fight back, we have to do the same. Join us, donate now.
In solidarity,
Emily
Executive Director at Groundwork Project
P.S. If you're looking for more ways to make a difference, please consider giving an additional gift to abortion funds and reproductive justice orgs in our four partner states: WV Free in West Virginia, the Yellowhammer Fund in Alabama, SHERo in Mississippi, and the Roe Fund of OKRCRC in Oklahoma.
