John -- Congress has had five long decades to codify Roe into law. Instead they have allowed a fundamental human right to hinge on the fig leaf of Supreme Court precedent.
With the revelation of the draft majority opinion that was leaked last night, we know that the fig leaf is about to be ripped away.
Roe and Casey, the two cases that substantiate your right to an abortion, are on the verge of being thrown out by a Supreme Court packed with far-right extremists.
It’s time for Congress to step up. There are a number of remedies we can pursue, and all options must be on the table. Here are just a few: |
- Expand the Supreme Court
- Abolish the Jim Crow filibuster
- Pass the Women’s Health Protection Act
-
Pass the Equality Act
|
Make no mistake, what’s happening goes far beyond abortion. The draft opinion that was leaked was clear: the GOP has plans to undermine our constitutional right to privacy, the legal underpinning of LGBTQIA+ rights, marriage equality, and countless other civil liberties.
If SCOTUS succeeds in throwing out the constitutional precedent for privacy, the implications will be far-reaching and difficult to undo without extraordinary remedies like those we outlined above – and more.
In the meantime, we will keep fighting and supporting anyone who needs abortion services.
Today we are asking our supporters to contribute to the National Network of Abortion Funds which distributes funds to clinics all around the country providing low and no-cost abortions to anyone who needs one.
We are also asking you to show up. MoveOn is staging a number of protests in front of courthouses across the country at 5pm today (local time, wherever you are). Find the nearest event here. We will never stop saying it. Abortion is healthcare. Healthcare is a human right. And human rights are non-negotiable.
Going backwards is not an option. We must seize this moment and be ready to dig in for a long fight. In solidarity,
Brand New Congress |
