Friend,
Last night, a draft ruling confirmed what we’ve feared: The Supreme Court’s far-right majority is set to overturn Roe v. Wade, allowing states across the country to outlaw abortion.
This decision is horrific, heartbreaking, and dangerous. We will not accept it.
For the past 50 years, because of Roe v. Wade, women in our country have had autonomy over their bodies and their futures. If Congress does not act to protect Roe v. Wade, women across this country will have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers for the first time in history.
And right now, it’s crucial to remember that abortion is still legal in the United States. Though we already know the likely outcome, the final ruling will not come until June. If you need abortion care right now, it’s still your right to receive it.
Once this decision goes into effect, the right to abortion care will be up to states to decide. It’s estimated that 26 states will likely ban abortion, and more will drastically restrict access to abortion care through new Republican-led legislation.
The right to bodily autonomy should never be up for debate. The right to access abortion care should have never been up for debate.
Act now: Urge your senators to protect abortion rights by writing Roe v. Wade into federal law through the Women’s Health Protect Act, so anyone can access abortion care — no matter their zip code.
Young people across this country have worked tirelessly to elect Democratic leaders who promised to represent us into office, resulting in a Democratic trifecta. Now, they need to use the power of the offices we’ve elected them to and combat the draconian, anti-choice laws pushed forward by Republicans.
For decades, Republicans have worked to bring the fight against abortion back to the Supreme Court. Let’s make one thing clear: This draft decision from SCOTUS is the result of a decades-long Republican scheme to ban all abortions without exceptions.
Our representatives have sat on the sidelines and watched as abortion rights have been attacked. Now is the time for them to act — Congress must codify Roe v. Wade into law now.
And if we need to abolish the filibuster to get this through the Senate, then it’s time for that, too.
The fight for reproductive justice is a fight for health care, gender, and racial justice. By failing to protect the right to an abortion, Congress has failed to protect Black and Indigenous people of color, women, trans and gender non-conforming folks, low-income, and young people.
It’s time for our representatives to act on their promises. Hold Congress accountable by ensuring they codify Roe v. Wade into law through the WHPA, allowing all of us to make our own decisions for our bodies, and our futures.
In this fight with you,
NextGen America
