Last night, for the first time in modern history, an initial draft of a Supreme Court decision was leaked. Penned by Samuel Alito, the draft takes 98 pages to justify their decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and, for the first time in 50 years, allow states to ban abortion. Though right now it’s a draft, and doesn’t represent a final decision, the Supreme Court confirmed this morning that it is in fact an authentic document.
If you’re completely surprised, then you haven’t been paying attention. This is the result of a long conservative project to dismantle the rights of the American people. Six out of the nine justices on the court are conservative hardliners, half of whom were appointed by Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump. Already, this court made the decision to do nothing when Texas essentially banned abortion. It was only a matter of time before SCOTUS officially unraveled our fundamental rights nationwide.
Still, it’s hard not to feel gutted when you see this brutal attack in print, on every news channel, and every social media feed.
Here's what I know: Abortion is still legal. But we’ve gotten a grim look into the future. Although this leaked decision is likely to overturn nearly 50 years of precedent and leave our rights hanging by a thread, we still have ways to fight back.
Here’s two ways you can get involved today:
First, donate to those working to keep abortion—a vital part of healthcare—accessible to the people that need it most. Half of the country could lose abortion access once this decision comes down. That will particularly impact people of color and the poor.

Second, get involved in the long term fight to expand the Supreme Court. We can’t let Mitch McConnell or Donald Trump hide behind their hand-picked Supreme Court to enact their extreme agenda. Our rights are too important for that. Congress has changed the Court’s size seven times throughout American history. In order to protect our fundamental rights, we’re going to need to rebalance the Court again.
50 members of the House of Representatives have already signed on to the Judiciary Act, a bill that would rebalance the Supreme Court by adding four new justices. In just a few clicks, send an email to your representative urging them to get on board.

This decision makes it crystal clear we don’t have time to waste. Even if you live in a blue state, you’re at risk. The right’s long-term strategy is to implement a nationwide abortion ban. After yesterday, they’re one step closer.
Let’s fight like hell.
