Dear friend,

It’s a moment many of us feared would happen, but is still stunning when it becomes reality: The Supreme Court is set to overturn Roe v. Wade — reversing the Court’s recognition for nearly 50 years that having an abortion is a fundamental right.

In states across the country, the far-right is pushing to criminalize women who choose to have an abortion as well as doctors who provide them.  Here in Arizona, Governor Ducey signed a cruel law that provides no exception for women who have been the victims of rape or incest. That’s shameful.

This is the first time in our nation’s history the Supreme Court will repeal a fundamental right, and Justice Alito’s draft opinion leaves the door open to repealing more fundamental rights. It takes aim at Substantive Due Process altogether — specifically jeopardizing the right to contraception, interracial marriage, and same-sex marriage.

Make no mistake: These rights are on the ballot this year. My opponents have made clear they support overturning Roe and the Supreme Court justices who are actively taking us back to the 1950s.

In Congress, I voted to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify in federal statute the right to an abortion. And I’ve called on the Senate to end the filibuster on this monumental bill and send it to the President’s desk.

I’ll never stop fighting to protect abortion rights and the rights of women to make their own health care decisions.

There’s a long road and a lot of work ahead of us. I’m ready.
