John,
I have some urgent news. The Supreme Court is considering overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that has guaranteed the right to abortion for a half-century.
When the leaked document hit my newsfeed last night, I knew I had to spring into action because access to safe, legal abortion is care, full stop. A decision like this would put millions at tremendous risk. Like all personal care decisions, people should make choices that are right for them.
The good news is this decision hasn’t been finalized. There are still abortion rights in the U.S. but we need to be really loud right now and fight to keep them.
Abortion rights groups are already organizing a resistance to this terrible decision in cities across the country, and you can be part of it. People are gathering at their local Federal Courthouse at 5pm today to speak out. Sign up for updates from Planned Parenthood.
You can also find an abortion rights group in your area here.
While this leaked decision isn't final, its breadth and sweeping disregard for people’s rights to make choices about care for their own bodies set a dangerous precedent.
Our nation already lacks care for our parents and our children. We have the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed nation, and Black people who give birth face the highest risks. We have no national paid parental leave and no universal childcare or long-term care. This ban will only put more strain on our underfunded care systems, taking away an essential form of care that many people rely on.
The people who will be most hurt by this decision are those who already lack access to quality healthcare: Black people, queer people, people with disabilities, care workers, and family caregivers.
It’s essential that we take this moment to fight back for access to safe, accessible, legal abortion care. Everybody deserves the opportunity to decide how to care for themselves.
How we respond now will determine what happens next. If we do nothing, we could lose a right that’s been essential for millions to care for themselves. But if we come together across the county, we can move the dial.
Can’t make it out today? Make a donation to the National Network of Abortion Funds, which works to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access for millions across the country.
With care,
