Dear Reader,

Today is World Press Freedom Day. To most people, it's probably just another day — but to us, it's one of the most important days of the year.

The team at PublicSource does this work because we love Pittsburgh, and we believe telling the truth about what goes on here will make it a better place. Our ability to keep you informed — from holding local leaders and institutions accountable to tracking developments and trends in your neighborhood  — is protected by the Constitution.

The writers of the Constitution couldn't have imagined the world we live in today. But they protected freedom of the press because they'd seen firsthand what unchecked power will do.

Ever since its invention, the printing press has been controversial. It makes sense. The idea of an informed public unnerves those who'd rather keep the truth hidden.

Especially now, when polarization and misinformation is rampant, it’s crucial that we all have access to accurate information.

A world without press freedom is one where government officials imprison journalists (or worse) for reporting on civil rights protests. It's one where scammers and polluters enrich themselves without oversight. It's one where you find out too late about, say, the risks of a pandemic.

If our journalism has ever informed or helped you, please make a contribution in honor of World Press Freedom Day and help keep it available for others.

Support our independent, nonprofit newsroom with a gift today.
We can't do this work without your support.

With our thanks,

The PublicSource team
