I hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but last night we saw the troubling news that the Supreme Court intends to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey — an act that would eliminate federal protections for abortion access in this country.

The Supreme Court’s likely decision gives a green light to the Georgia GOP and other extreme legislatures nationwide to again pass extreme legislation that would outlaw abortion. Controversial bills like HB481, the 6-week abortion ban, which was passed and signed by Governor Kemp but was blocked by the courts, could almost immediately go into effect.

Let me be clear: women will die if this happens.

This decision will be an assault on every single American woman and pregnant person. But Georgians have long been fighting the GOP’s cruel, dehumanizing attacks against our right to make decisions about our bodies, our futures, and our health. Georgia already has the highest maternal mortality rate in the country. If the GOP actually cared about families and women, they would work to expand affordable healthcare.

We must codify protections for abortion access into federal law, and to do that, we must protect our pro-choice majority in the House.
